SAFAF is a campaign to support the statement made by Academics For Academic Freedom among students and push for a more provocative student body.

As AFAF points out the university is the historic home of free debate - students are a part of that too, both as future academics and as citizens.

SAFAF calls for students to challenge authority and orthodoxy wherever they find it, whether in the university or in the wider world. We further pledge to support our lecturers when they do.

Offence is not a excuse to hinder free debate and we condemn those who use it. As students we can tolerate lecturers who we find offensive and will challenge them. What is intolerable is any attempt to suppress our or our lecturers' freedom to engage with controversial or offensive ideas.

We the undersigned:

1) Support AFAF’s statement of academic freedom.

2) Call for the same freedoms for students.

3) And call for Student Unions, JCRs and the NUS to join us in supporting AFAF.
